Reflecting on My Journey: From Fixie to Speed

Reflecting on My Journey: From Fixie to Speed

March 8, 2025

As I look back on my cycling journey, I am reminded that not every ride goes as planned. Three years ago, I embarked on my first longer bike rides with my Bonvelo Fixie. One of those rides, which I now fondly refer to as my “legendary ride,” was along the dyke—a route I now frequently take with my Canyon Aeroad. Back then, I managed a speed of 22 km/h, which was a remarkable achievement for me, especially considering my background.

My Transformation

Coming from a non-sporty lifestyle and weighing 160 kg, completing an over 80 km tour through Hamburg was one of my greatest athletic accomplishments. I had never been into sports, not even as a child, but something sparked my interest in cycling. I recall seeing people ride this route on Strava and wanting to try it out for myself. Today, this route has become my standard ride, and I often find myself reflecting on how far I’ve come.

The Route

The dyke route in Hamburg is, in my opinion, one of the best cycling routes in the area. It offers no traffic lights and features freshly laid asphalt, which was recently renovated in 2025. The smooth surface makes for an even better ride than before. I try to ride this route three to four times a week, depending on the weather, to maintain my fitness and endurance. When the wind is in my favor, I can reach speeds of up to 38 km/h, which is a significant improvement from my early days with the Fixie.

Lessons Learned

Looking back, I realize that my journey wasn’t just about the speed or distance; it was about finding motivation and pushing past my limits. Seeing old photos from that first ride reminds me of the misty mornings and the cold, but most importantly, it reminds me of the sense of pride and accomplishment I felt. If you’re ever in Hamburg, I highly recommend giving this route a try. You can find more details about the route [here](link to your route on Strava or a map).
